The author has evidently devoted much time and labour to the production of this paper. It is illustrated by numerous preparations and by many beautiful drawings. Its defects appear to me to be due, not to a deficiency of work, but rather to the fact that the enquiry is one which the author was not thoroughly qualified, by his previous labours, to undertake. I must in conclusion express my opinion that it is not fitted for a place in the Philosophical Transactions, nor do I believe that its publication in its present form would prove to be of advantage to the best interests of its author. Wm S. Savory March. 1861.
