I think it most probable that 
this valley was really caused by sub-
sidence, tho’ this is only an hypothe 
sis as in the case of the Val delle 
Bove on Etna, & <s>but<\s> granting it to be 
so I cannot see how it favours 
the upheaval theory & the author 
is at no pains to point out the 
bearing of the supposed engulfment 
of the said valley on the doctrine of 
the upheaval of the older part of 
the cone of Teneriffe. The engulfment 
equally admits of a sinking down, such as is assumed.
As the geology above allu-
ded to is scattered thro’ the volume 
on Teneriffe already before the public, whereas here it is 
brought together it would no doubt 
be useful & convenient to have it in print
