For instance, having had his attention directed to the subject of lateral refraction in consequence of certain phaenomena described by Humboldt, he was justified in shewing, as he appears satisfactorily to shew, that the phaenomena in question were of a local and exceptional character, and that Humboldt was mistaken in supposing they had any relation to lateral refraction.
