                                months on the Peak should not have

made cursorily, of former travellers,
and there would seem to be 
no objection to his referring to 
them for the purpose of correc-
ting them. For instance, having had 
his attention directed to the 
subject of lateral refraction in 
consequence of certain phaenomena 
described by Humboldt, he 
was justified in shewing, as 
he appears satisfactorily to shew,
that the phaenomena in question 
were of a local and exceptional 
character, and that Humboldt 
was mistaken in supposing they 
had any relation to lateral 
refraction. But there is much 
to object to in the <u>tone of
