Referee report by James Challis on 'Astronomical Experiment on the Peak of Teneriffe, Carried out under the Sanction of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty' by C. Piazzi Smyth

observations & views of others are spoken of. I quite agree with the remarks in pencil (signed J F W H) to the effect that there are some passages of this nature that the Society cannot consent to print. I have made a note (opposite p. 58 of Vol 7) res- pecting the manner in which the observations of Mr Jones (an American <s>(<\s>attached to the Japan expedition) are mentioned. All that is said is justifiable if only the phraseology were slightly altered. There are also in the Paper here and there sen- tences that would be improved by less freedom in the style of composition. I am, My dear Sir, Yours very truly J. Challis Professor G. G. Stokes Secretary of the Royal Society
