On the merits of those parts of the Paper which relate to Geology & Botany, I do not profess to give an opinion, but I could not avoid noticing the great advantage derived from photography in giving exactness of form and of linear proportions to the representation of geological and botanical objects. Although I approve of the contents of the Paper generally, I think that in some particulars it requires alteration. I have made a pencil note opposite to p. 24 of Vol. 8, where it ap- pears to me that an inference drawn from facts relating to the spectrum is incorrectly stated. The character of the Paper is in some parts too theoretical and argu- mentative, and would be im- proved by partaking more of the nature of a Report. It was hardly possible that a residence of two
