Referee report by H. Lamb on 'On the Dynamical Theory of Incompressible Viscous Fluids and the Determination of the Criterion' by O. Reynolds

<u>copy this <\u> 377 Prof. Reynolds’ Paper The referees have found great difficulty in following the argument of this paper; partly in consequence of the fact that such terms as “mean-mean- motion” and “relative mean motion” are used without any precise definition. There is a well- known distinction between molecular and molar motion; but it is not clear <s>where on physica<\s> in the case of molar motion how any physical distinction is to be drawn between what is “mean” and what is “relative”. The introduction might be greatly shortened, as a good deal of it <s>cannot <\s> can only be understood after reading the rest of the paper. The purpose of [para]5(a) p. 3 is not evident. The author’s view does not appear to be different from that generally held, but it is insisted on as something new.
