This photo of Shackleton, Scott and Wilson was taken on 3 February 1903, on their return to the ship from their southern journey. Clarence Hare, the Assistant Steward, wrote in his diary: 'They were very much sun-burnt and had grown bushy beards, which had become bleached by the sun and made them look like old men.'
