                                MEMORANDUM ON CAPTAIN SCOTT'S
LETTER TO THE ROYAL SOCIETY RE
METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE ANTARCTIC.

by M r. R.H. Curtis

Captain Scott appears to object to the
observations entered in the "Meteorological Journal" having
been subjected to criticism before being used, and
apparently suggests that they ought to have been accepted
without comment at the face-value.

From the experience gained in this kind of
examination during many years I believe such scrutiny to
be necessary even when dealing with observations made by
the most careful and experienced observers. Certain kinds
of errors are easily enough made, and just as readily pass
unnoticed until a critical, but not for that reason an
unfriendly, eye detects them.

In the case of the "Discovery's" observations
close examination was rendered necessary from the beginning
by the frequent obvious errors and discrepancies which were
met with quite early in the work of preparing the data for
press, and every care was taken to verify doubtful entries
or to reconcile differences found to exist between the
entries in the "Journal" and the original entry of the
observation made in the "Rough" book. The rule followed
however was to print what was given and never to
substitute a reading even where it seemed possible to do so with
advantage, but if an entry was so obviously an error as to
admit of no doubt upon the point it was omitted altogether.
