DISCOVERY,
AUCKLAND ISLAND.
March 23rd, 1904.

Sirs,
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your kind letter (with Enclosures) dated October 15th, 1903. All on board are much gratified by your appreciation of their efforts.
I much regret the difficulties that arose from our unfortunate detention in the ice and the large outlay of money considered necessary for our relief; until the arrival of the relief ships I failed to realize that such a grave view could be taken of our situation as is exposed in your letter to the First Lord of the Treasury of May 10th 1903. I blame myself that such misconceptions should have arisen. Apart from this unfortunate matter and in view of your original instructions, our second Winter in the Mc Murdo Strait cannot but be regarded as most advantageous; if not before. I am confident this will be realized when the Scientific results of the expedition are published. I forward herewith a summary of our proceedings since March 1903.
I have called for preliminary reports from the scientific officers but these may be somewhat delayed as I have agreed with them in believing they should have full time to reconsider their notes and re-examine their collections. I shall forward under a separate cover a chart constructed by Mr. Mulock, data obtained since its construction and some slight errors will necessitate its modification and I think it should not be reproduced without a notification to this effect.
We have been enabled to resurvey the whole known Cost of Victoria land and the ballen Islands, Charts of which will be
