white and flaky at the surface and had
a tendency to break up on immersion
in water.

Dried lenses took up water more quickly
than fresh lenses; those, which had been
dried for several days and had lost nearly
60% of their weight, recovered in the case of
ox lenses as much as 20% and in the
case of dogs' lenses as much as 35% of
their original weight in one hour.
