
Extract Military Letter from Fort St George dated 26th March 1844 No 16. 1 We have the honor to report that the Honorable Company’s Astronomer having been permitted to proceed to Tranquebar for the purpose of watching the circumstances attending a total Eclipse of the Sun on the 21st December 1843 we directed Lieutenant Ludlow Superintendent of the Magnetic Observatory at Madras, to accompany that Officer and assist in the observations and we beg to forward a copy of the result of his journey. Lieutenant Ludlow embraced the opportunity of making observations of the Dip Horizontal Intensity at certain places on his return to the Presidency which are included in his report.
