Parents: William Henry Bateson (1812–1881), master of St John's College, Cambridge, and Anna Aikin (1829–1918), daughter of James Aikin (1792–1878), Liverpool shipping merchant. Spouse: Beatrice Durham, daughter of a senior surgeon at Guy's Hospital, Arthur Edward Durham (1834–1895) (1889). Children: Three sons: John was killed in the First World War in 1918, Martin committed suicide in 1922, and Gregory Bateson (1904–1980) had a distinguished career in social anthropology and psychology. A cousin of the grandfather of Patrick Bateson FRS.
