Referee's report by Robert Bellamy Clifton, on two papers 'On some hitherto undescribed optical properties of doubly refracting crystals.—Preliminary notice' by Henry Clifton Sorby, and 'On the foci of lines seen through a crystalline plate' by George Gabriel Stokes
Reference number: RR/8/64
Date: 08 August 1877
Description
Not recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. Suggests publication instead in the Proceedings. Refers to work of Dancee [?], Francesco Brioschi and Ladd [?]. The paper apparently is the first printed account of the use of a ruled glass plate in a microscope. Considers the paper hastily put together. Both papers should be printed together, and will write to Mr White to communicate this [RR/8/65].. 'How you will hate me for bothering you with this tremendously long letter, but I hope before we meet time will have softened your anger. Please remember that this letter has been written at different times and with many interruptions, so if it is unintelligible don't be too hard upon me'.
