Referee's report by James Clerk Maxwell, on a paper 'On magneto-electric induction in liquids and gases.—Part I. production of induced currents in electrolytes' by John Ambrose Fleming
Reference number: RR/8/19
Date: 16 October 1877
Description
Not recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. If the proposed second part, as indicated in the title, makes a clear case for induced currents in gases, then would have no hesitation in recommending the paper for publication in the Philosophical Transactions. However, the current paper is all that is at hand, and from which opinions must be drawn. Refers to work by Michael Faraday. Publication depends upon the author's success in the proposed experimental subject. This paper should be published with one containing the experimental results, even if that means postponing publication of this first part. The paper is not of sufficient importance to be published on it's own. The paper is sufficiently covered by the abstract already published in the Proceedings, the only omission being the measurements in section six.
