Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. It contains a great deal of valuable work but needs to be considerably tightened up. The introduction and some of the papers should be reduced in length. There are too many figures and some can be omitted. The discussion part of the paper should be modified to report on the new experimental material found.
