Referee's report by Geoffrey Ingram Taylor, on three papers 'Two-dimensional boundary-value problems of elasticity' by Bibhutibhusan Sen, and 'A stress-strain curve for the atomic lattice of mild steel in compression' by S L Smith and W A Wood, and 'The influence of temperature on boundary lubrication' by J J Frewing

Reference number: RR/68/135

Date: 27 February 1942

Description

Sectional Committee: Engineering

Recommended for publication in the 'Proceedings of the Royal Society of London'. Refers to similar work by Albert Edward Green.

Contains extra question - 'Is there any information contained in the paper which likely to be of value to the enemy?' Referee replies no.

Enclosed letter. Discusses his mechanic, Thompson, and apologises for holding the first paper for so long. The work looks very like the work of Albert Edward Green, and wished to compare the two. Albert Edward Green's paper may have been withheld until after the war, but is not sure. Perhaps when Richard Vynne Southwell returns he can look into this.

Returns the second paper, and a report fro transmission to the authors. The results are valuable, even though he does not agree with their interpretation.

Has not been able to contact the author of the third paper, as no-one seem to know where he is, or anything about him.
