Recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. Suggests shortening the introduction and summary. Suggests clarifying the use of the expressions 'stimuli received' and 'impulses conveyed' which appear to have been confused. Suggests cutting down some of the figures, for which blue pencil should be used to indicate parts which can be omitted.
