Referee's report by William Benjamin Carpenter, on a paper 'Inquiries into the national dietary' by Edward Smith

Reference number: RR/5/248

Date: 28 November 1864

Description

Not recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. The collected materials are not of a scientific value, but may be of economic value. '...the human body, being treated as a machine, the effect of varying supplies of food upon the quantity of work it is capable of performing without deterioration should be precisely ascertained'. As the research was funded by the Privy Council, the details in the paper would be more suited to any report put out by the Medical Officer of the Privy Council. Suggests the Council might suggest such a publication to the Government.
