Letter from Walter White, regarding a paper 'Theoretical considerations on the conditions under which the (drift) deposits containing the remains of extinct mammalia and flint implements were accumulated, and on their geological age. - On the Loess of the valleys of the South of England, and of the Somme and the Seine' by Joseph Prestwich
Reference number: RR/5/209
Date: 14 July 1863
Description
Apologises for the delay, as Basire [?] and Wesley [?] are on holiday for two days so cannot get their estimate until the end of the week. The large maps 'will each reduce to one 4 to plate'. Has arranged with the author for his owning the drawings once made. [Remainder of letter crossed out but legible] Edward Sabine's papers have been sent to Taylors, with a proof print ready on the day, Basire has three plates for estimate. Basire has given an estimate for the maps of Adolf Schlagintweit, with which the President and William Sharpey are satisfied. Suggests he send the proofs to Schlagintweit [Adolf Schlagintweit or Hermann Schlagintweit?] for correction before he [Schlagintweit] leaves town. Suggests all details relating to papers be concluded before the 13th, when the author [Walter White] will leave town. The papers not yet returned for second referees are - James South, Jonathan Frederick Pollock, Augustus Matthiessen, Carl Vogt and Stewart [?]. The final two papers are for John Tyndall, should they be sent to him in Switzerland? Should the thallium and iron paper by Augustus Matthiessen and Carl Vogt ['On the Influence of temperature on the electric conducting-power of thallium and iron', Philosophical Transactions, doi:10.1098/rstl.1863.0016 Vol.153 1863 RR/5/144 and RR/5/145] be sent to the printers, and is it to form a portion of Part II for 1863? Will Schlagintweit be in the same part? Encloses a report by John Stenhouse.
