Letter from Lionel Smith Beale, on his paper 'On the structure and formation of the so-called apolar, unipolar, and bipolar nerve-cells of the frog' to The Royal Society

Reference number: RR/5/12

Date: 05 August 1863

Description

Will be omitting some of the drawings, and others shall be reduced in size. Once the engravings are finished, if the Council still believe the printing cost to be too high, the author is willing to personally cover the excess. Asks to be permitted one hand-coloured figure, and one other in shaded tints. Would rather not use lithographs, will finish the drawings in wood. Will refer to Jacob Augustus Lockhart Clarke's paper, although considers that it covers a much different subject [development of ganglia in Mammalia] to the current paper [specific cells of the frog]. The two papers also come to opposing conclusions. Is willing to discuss the issue and conclusions with others, and discusses current controversies in physiological science. Refers to work by Albert von Kölliker. Comments that this branch of enquiry has higher prominence in Germany, despite many discoveries by English scientists in the past decades.
