Referee's report by Horrace Tabberer Brown, on a paper 'Experimental researches on vegetable- assimilation and respiration III. On the effect of temperature on Carbon Dioxide assimilation' by Gabrielle Louise Caroline Matthaei
Reference number: RR/16/82
Date: October 1903
Description
Sectional Committee: Botany
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The paper is of a high degree of scientific interest. Recommends the paper is re-written in a somewhat more condensed form and in such a way as to clarify the main points of the argument [annotated in another hand 'to author?']. Thinks the curves illustrating the experiments should be published but on a reduced scale. With regard to the tabulated results on which his opinion has been especially asked, Brown thinks they ought to be published as they stand. Notes an important omission to which attention should certainly be drawn; there is no indication of the actual amount of carbon dioxide in the air-stream used, nor any assurance that this was kept constant in the various experiments. This has an important bearing on the author's 'maximal assimilation' when all the other conditions are constant. Some reference to this should be made, otherwise many of the results might be open to criticism.
