Description

Sectional Committee: [Mathematics]

In reply to Harrison's letter of the 16th April Baker thinks the results obtained should be published somewhere. It would be enough if the publication consisted only of a quite clear summary of his descriptions and results, but it would be more interesting to have his proof to. As far as Baker is aware, Jackson is publishing these results in at least three places. Baker thinks it would be far better if the whole series was published in one place. He also thinks that Jackson has not yet 'said all he is prepared to say at once'. Thus Baker thinks the right course is a private negotiation with Jackson on the part of the Secretary of the Royal Society. If Jackson does not agree with the proposal, Baker thinks Jackson should be offered only so much space in the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' as will suffice for him to state his definitions and results; and he should be warned that no space may be given to him for say a year following to any other paper which appears on the same generalisation to some other function.
