Referee's report by William Burnside, on a paper 'The differential invariants of a surface, and their geometric significance' by Andrew Russell Forsyth
Reference number: RR/16/53
Date: March 1903
Description
Sectional Committee: Mathematics
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. There are no illustrations. Briefly describes the two distinct parts of the paper. In the first a very elaborate and complicated piece of calculation is carried out. The method used is not original but owing to the large number of variable quantities involved, great skill is necessary to make the application successful. The result arrived at is of the nature of an enumeration and valuable in itself. It is doubtful how far it is worthwhile printing the details of the calculations. The second part of the paper does not appear to him to have been very systematically put together and many of the separate identifications might suitably be proposed as examination questions. Of this latter part of the paper not more than the results should be printed.
