Referee's report by Augustus Edward Hough Love, on a paper 'Skew refraction through a lens; and on the hollow-pencil given by an annulus of a very obliquely placed lens' by Joseph David Everett
Reference number: RR/16/51
Date: 11 March 1903

Description
Sectional Committee: Mathematics
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The general problem is not attempted, the numerical solution of a special case is computed in detail. Recommends an extended abstract be published in the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' and lists what this should contain. The references to Philipp Ludwig von Seidel's work should be modified. Discusses two points which should be clarified and notes that in section three a reference should be given to Herman's '[A Treatise on] Geometrical Optics', page 22 which contains formulae equivalent to those numbered '(3)' on page five, but simpler. All the figures should be reproduced in the extended abstract, on squared paper to avoid the necessity of printing tabular matter which related to the computed case only. In general the results of the paper are of considerable value and should certainly be published. The abstract issued at the meeting should not appear in the 'Proceedings' without modification.
