Referee's report by George Ballard Mathews, on a paper 'Skew refraction through a lens; and on the hollow-pencil given by an annulus of a very obliquely placed lens' by Joseph David Everett

Reference number: RR/16/50

Date: c January 1903

Description

Sectional Committee: Mathematics

Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. Though the paper is clear and interesting it seems merely a special problem in geometrical optics, worked out in detail, and does not make any important addition to scientific knowledge. Besides this, it is in part very diffuse, especially in the extent of the tables and the descriptions of the figures which to a great extent speak for themselves. As the figures will probably appear in the Proceedings it may be pointed out that the last figure in plate two conveys the erroneous impression that it is terminated by a 'salient point' but this cannot be the case and if given on a larger scale would show rapidly changing but continuous curvature.
