Referee's report by James Gordon MacGregor, on a paper 'The halogen hydrides as conducting solvents, parts I, II, III, and IV' by D McIntosh, Bertram Dillon Steele, and E H Archibald
Reference number: RR/16/393
Date: 25 February 1905

Description
Assessment of a manuscript submitted for publication by the Royal Society, completed by the referee using a standard printed form.
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
MacGregor thinks the papers are a definite step in the advancement of natural knowledge and should be published in the 'Philosophical Transactions' in full. Queries the conclusion in part IV, pages ten to 13, that the molecular conductivity must decrease with dilution. Thinks this statement should read 'may' instead of 'must'. The slip does not affect the author's reasoning and probably for this reason has not been noticed. Considers no other modifications necessary, except for a few verbal ones. All the illustrations should be reproduced but their scale may be reduced. All may be included in the text. The paper seems to be a very valuable contribution to their knowledge of the subject.
Published: 'The Halogen Hydrides as Conducting Solvents. Part I. The Vapour Pressures, Densities, Surface Energies and Viscosities of the Pure Solvents. Part II. The Conductivity and Molecular Weights of Dissolved Substances. Part III. The Transport Numbers of Certain Dissolved Substances. Part IV. The Abnormal Variation of Molecular Conductivity, etc.' by D McIntosh, B D Steele and E H Archibald, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. A, 1906, 205, 99-167.
