Description

Sectional Committee: not stated.

The publication of these extracts in Proceedings appears to be more a question of policy than of the scientific importance of the subject.

By permission of the Council an author may take a copy of a paper in the archives and publish it elsewhere, but this seems very different from asking for the publication of portions of such a paper in the Proceedings after the Council has decided not to publish it in extenso, especially when as in this case, a condensed account has already appeared in the 'Proceedings'. Such a series of extracts as the present could not be communicated by the author, although it might be stated that the extracts had been made by permission of the Council and with the sanction of the author. Thinks the difficulty would be entirely overcome if Prideaux incorporated the extracts in the account of the investigation which he is about to undertake. The establishment of the existence of an iodine pentafloride would have considerable theoretical interest and the experiments are well worth repetition. If the principle of printing these abstracts in the 'Proceedings' is conceded, they are, in McLeod's opinion, quite suitable for publication, and would throw additional light on the abstract printed in Proceedings, XX, 70.
