Referee's report by Joseph Jackson Lister, on a paper 'A biometrical study of conjugation in paramaecium' by Dr Raymond Pearl
Reference number: RR/16/357
Date: May 1905

Description
Sectional Committee: Zoology
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. Summarises what the paper claims to show in relation to the work of [Emile] Maupas. Includes a small sketch of a free and conjugate form of Leucophrys patula from 'Archives de zoologie expérimentale et générale', series two, volume seven. If Maupas' view is correct, and Pearl makes no attempt to show that it is not, it appears that the main line of argument in Pearl's paper is beside the mark. If the conjugates are, as Maupas supposes, differentiated gametes then the difference between conjugate and non-conjugate in size calls for no special comment. The correlation in size between the members of a conjugated pair is perhaps a phenomena of some importance, though if Pearl's explanation is correct, it is difficult to see how it is to be brought in relation with assortative mating in man.
