Referee's report by Hugh Longbourne Callendar, on a paper 'The determination of the specific heat of superheated steam by throttling & other experiments' by Mr A H Peak
Reference number: RR/16/353
Date: 30 March 1905
Description
Assessment of a manuscript submitted for publication by the Royal Society, in the form of a manuscript letter addressed to Robert William Frederick Harrison [Assistant Secretary, Royal Society].
Addressed from the Board of Education, South Kensington, London, S.W..
Sectional Committee: not stated.
Callendar thinks the paper should be published in the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' with reduced illustrations in the text.
Osbone Reynolds, in common with all engineers, seems to have misunderstood the sense in which Peake uses the term 'superheated' and his criticism is of no account in this respect. The paper appears to be much the same as when Callendar saw it some years ago, except for the omission of some experiments on the specific heat, which Callendar explained to Peake were no good. The later experiments on specific heat are better and yield fairly good results, confirming Callendar's theory, as far as they go. The point in which Peake differs from Grindley is unimportant and does not affect the values of the cooling effect, or slope of the cooling curves.
Published: 'The Determination of the Specific Heat of Superheated Steam by Throttling and Other Experiments' by A H Peake, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, 1905, 76, 185-205.
