Referee's report by William Napier Shaw, on a paper 'The flow of the River Thames in relation to British pressure & rainfall changes' by Joseph Norman Lockyer and Dr W J S Lockyer
Reference number: RR/16/340
Date: 25 April 1905

Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Shaw thinks the paper should be published in the Proceedings. Shaw has hesitated a long time about the portion from page 20 onwards. This section is very slight and he does not understand what the term 'mixture' really means as between two things which are 'inverse'. The paper is a continuation of a series that involves the compilation of a good deal of valuable material and may stimulate discussion and on these grounds he is in favour of its being published as it stands. If published in full all the illustrations are required. Plate I might have been made to incorporate figure two by rearranging the order and including Oxford rainfall, but the juxtaposition as shown in figure two, is wanted somehow. If page 20 and what follows were omitted, figure three and plate II would also go. Plate II is instructional and it would be a pity to omit it. The discussion does not do full justice to the material but a number of interesting points are disclosed and it is desirable that the attention of scientific people should be called to the problems suggested in this way.
