Referee's report by William Davidson Niven, on a paper 'An account of the pendulum observations made at Kew & Greenwich Observatories in 1903' by Gerald Ponsonby Lenox-Conyngham
Reference number: RR/16/335
Date: July 1905

Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The paper can make no claims to originality. Great pains were obviously taken over the routine work and a record of the results should be published but not in the Transactions. If a different view of the paper's merits is ultimately adopted the paper should at all events be much reduced in length. The appendix which treats of the geological strata under Kew and Greenwich, should be separated from Lenox-Conyngham's work, a reference is all that would be required. In an appended note Niven notes that in his report he did not state his chief objection to the paper, which was that he had a feeling of uncertainty and want of conviction that the result could be relied upon. He did not think the subject of the paper a very great one, and it was treated at a length out of all proportion to its importance.
