Description

Sectional Committee: Botany

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions.. Suggests asking the author to consider whether some of the photograph are likely, when reproduced, to show the point they are intended to illustrate. Seward thinks some of the photographs should either be omitted or replaced by drawings which would unquestionably enable the reader to follow the descriptions with greater care. The paper not only summarises and criticises statements previously published, but adds other facts of importance. It is not simply descriptive but contains an able discussion of the bearing of the evidence examined on questions of plant evolution. Lists his chief criticisms; rather more photographs are given than are essential and in some cases drawings would illustrate the point with much greater clearness; the name Sphenopteris Horninghausii is used in the description of figure two but in other places another genus name is adopted. Queries if Crossotheca hughesiana is correct as a name founded on the surname Hughes.
