Referee's report by William Huggins, on a paper 'Fifth & sixth catalogues of the comparative brightness of the stars; in continuation of those printed in the Philosophical Transactions for 1796-1799' by the late Sir William Herschel

Reference number: RR/16/325

Date: July 1905

Description

Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry

The author published a series of four papers (known as a 'catalogue') in Philosophical Transactions on this subject in volumes 86, 87 and 89. Two more papers followed, which were not published at the time - this report focuses on these two previously unpublished papers.

There is no doubt that in completion of the 'catalogue' already printed in the Philosophical Transactions, these observations should be available for reference. Probably the scientific case would be met if these manuscripts were bound and placed for reference in the Society's library, and notice of them printed in Proceedings. The number of persons likely to consult these catalogues is so very small that it is a question whether it is desirable to spend the Society's funds, which are not too ample, upon printing them. On the other hand the expense would not be great and reasons from sentiment are strong in favour of printing. The Astronomer Royal and Professor Turner should be consulted.

[Posthumously published in Philosophical Transactions A, 1906].
