Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The appendix which has not yet been reported on is doubtful. The introductory part has been adapted in pencil for the Proceedings as an abstract. The paper has already been re-written and condensed, at the request of the communicator. All the illustrations should be reproduced.
