Description

Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry

Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions in its present form. The author's assumption about the ionic structure of potassium chloride are reconciled with the osmotic pressure and freezing point results by remarking that such results are relative only and all solutes may consist of aggregates. This ignores the thermodynamic basis of the absolute values of osmotic pressures et cetera, and is quite wrong. The parts of the paper in which this error is involved must be cut or reconstructed. Although speculative, the author's treatment seems a fair working hypothesis and some interesting results are obtained. However the paper is too diffuse. If the author wishes the paper to be published in the 'Transactions' he should be asked to amend his treatment of the dilution law and put the remainders in more concise form, omitting the parts not clearly necessary. Annotated in another hand that this last sentence should be sent to the author.
