Referee's report by Hugh Frank Newall, on a paper 'Flame spectra' by Charles de Watteville
Reference number: RR/16/238
Date: 11 July 1904

Description
Sectional Committee: not stated.
Newall encloses some additional remarks on Watteville's paper [see below]. Thinks the case seems a little affected by the possible fact that the author is presumably French and wished to have his work noted at home as well as to present it to the Royal Society as having been carried out in England under the direction of Schuster. Newall has had his attention drawn to several papers by Watteville in the 'Comptes Rendus' which he briefly describes. From neither of these brief papers can an experimenter derive any help as to details of observation or experiment such as the present papers affords, and he is of the opinion that the present paper should be published in full with the illustrations. After further consideration he still thinks the paper suitable for Philosophical Transactions, partly because of the subject and of the tabular statements, but partly because it would make a long paper, close on 30 pages in Proceedings'.
The author would have been well advised had he sent black and white enlargements of the spectra at the end of the paper for reproduction in a reduced form.
[Published in Philosophical Transactions A, 1905].
