Referee's report by Albert Charles Seward, on a paper 'On the structure and affinities of fossil plants from the palaeozoic rocks. V. A new type of sphenophyllaceous cone (sphenophyllum fertile) from the lower coal measures' by Dukinfield Henry Scott

Description

Sectional Committee: Botany

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The description of the sections might be curtailed in some cases but he prefers to leave this to the author's discretion. Urges the author to give a diagrammatic drawing of the cone to give the reader a clearer idea of its complex morphology to allow the author to curtail some of the descriptive text.

Thinks there is a tendency to publish an unnecessarily large number of microphotographs illustrative of the structure of Paleozoic plants. In the present instance he would suggest that all the useful and essential photographs could be analysed as two plates instead of three. Explains why figure one could be omitted. Figure two might be trimmed to smaller dimensions and figure three might also be slightly cut down. Figure five is obscure and if retained might be reduced by cutting off the inessential parts. Figure four might also be cut down or reproduced as a drawing in plate four. It is desirable that all the drawings be reproduced. These suggestions must not be regarded in any sense as a reflection on the importance of the work. The paper is of considerable interest and importance but he is led to make the above criticisms as the result of a conviction based on this and some other memoirs in the series entitled 'On the Structure & Affinities of Fossil Plants from the Paleozoic Rocks'.
