Referee's report by Harry Marshall Ward, on a paper 'The action of wood on a photographic plate in the dark' by William James Russell
Reference number: RR/16/223
Date: July 1904
Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. All the illustrations should be reproduced. [Annotated in another hand that the illustrations are estimated to make seven plates at a total cost of £35]. The paper seems to be of the utmost importance as an addition to natural knowledge and as promising questions for further enquiry. Explains why Russell's remarkable results with pine and larch do not point to resin as the active product. Wonders if if would be worthwhile testing other substances such as vanillin, lignin et cetera, with a view to getting further into the 'secret'.
[Published in Philosophical Transactions B, 1905].
Endorsed on verso as received 12 July 1904.
