Second referee's report by Horace Lamb, on a paper 'The seismic effect of tidal stresses' by Richard Dixon Oldham
Reference number: RR/16/219
Date: 03 June 1904
Description
Sectional Committee: [Physics and chemistry]
There is practically no difference between Darwin's opinion of Oldham's paper and Lamb's own opinion. Notes that Darwin's previous calculations seem absolutely to exclude a tidal influence on earthquakes a priori. He must now withdraw his recommendation that the paper be printed in the Philosophical Transactions. At the same time he adheres to the opinion to which Darwin agrees, that the paper is entitled to publication somewhere.
If the title is modified as Darwin suggests, he does not see why the paper might not appear in the Proceedings, if it is not judged too long. In that case Darwin's report should be communicated to the author to enable him to make modifications. If a third referee is required, he thinks [Charles] Chree very suitable.
