Description

Sectional committee: [Physics and chemistry]

Harrison encloses Darwin's remarks on Oldham's paper [not attached]. Asks to whom the paper should now be sent. The second referee nominated by the Physics and Chemistry Committee was Professor Horace Lamb. Callendar replies on the same day that Chree would be an admirable referee who would not be biased by Darwin's opinion. Callendar would prefer however to follow their usual custom of submitting the paper to Chree without sending Darwin's arguments, so that they may obtain an entirely independent opinion. Larmor replies [undated] that he thinks Lamb should be the second referee as he has recently done earthquake work and does not have so much Royal Society work as Chree. The latter could be a third referee if required.
