Description

Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. Suggests the tables and diagrams for Cu, Fe, Pt and Steel are published in full and that the diagrams for rigidity modulus and temperature would suffice for other metals. In additional manuscript notes under the title 'Genereal Remarks', Poynting notes Horton's work is by far the most accurate hitherto done on the subject and well worthy of publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions', but in as much as there are indications that the results differ for different specimens of the same material, many of the tables and diagrams are of no permanent value and may be replaced by general accounts of the results obtained. In part IV it would suffice to give the results with the range of deviation from linear expansion and omit the tables. On the report of the referee forwarded to him, Poynting agrees as to the cutting out of page twenty three, the result alone is needed. Thinks the particular method of coincidences described on pages ten to fourteen should be retained. Discusses a method used concerning gravity work which may be new, and if not a reference will be all that is required.
