Referee's report by Ernest Howard Griffiths, on a paper 'The high temperature standards of the National Physical Laboratory. An account of a comparison of Platinum Thermometers and Thermo-junctions with the Gas-thermometer' by John Allen Harker

Reference number: RR/16/188

Date: February 1904

Description

Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The tables will certainly be very valuable and save much time in the reduction of observations. Advises on some alterations he would suggest to the tables. It appears that all the illustrations are necessary for a full comprehension of the paper. The necessity of a direct comparison between the scales of the gas and the platinum thermometer and that resulting from the use of a thermo-junction has long been evident. More than seven years ago Griffiths and the late Sir W Roberts-Austen had decided to conduct a joint investigation into the subject. The apparatus was actually constructed and was of a very similar nature to that used by Dr Harker. Circumstances prevented the carrying out of the work and it is therefore a great satisfaction to Griffiths to find that this important task has been so ably accomplished by Harker.
