Referee's report by George Ballard Mathews, on a paper 'A memoir on the theory of order as defined by boundaries' by Edward T Dixon
Reference number: RR/16/164
Date: July 1904

Description
Sectional Committee: Mathematics
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in whole or in part and cannot see that the author has made any really substantial contribution to the subject of which he treats. The author's treatment of continuity is obscure and unsatisfactory. Dixon tries to avoid any explicit use of arithmetic, the result is merely awkwardness of expression without any improvement in logical rigour, especially now that the numerical continuum has been so clearly defined. No references are given and Dixon is apparently unacquainted with recent work on the logic of mathematics. If this report differs essentially from that of the other referee, Mathews trusts the paper will be sent to someone else. Mathews' feeling that all clear and definite treatment of aggregates must be arithmetical may have caused him to do Dixon injustice.
