Referee's report by Arthur Schuster, on a paper 'An enquiry into the nature of the relationship between sunspot frequency and terrestrial magnetism' by Charles Chree
Reference number: RR/16/155
Date: March 1904
Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, though not without doubt. It does not on its own mark a distinct step in the advancement of natural knowledge but may ultimately be found to be a link in the chain which will connect their present ignorance to their complete knowledge of sunspot phenomena. The paper is unduly long and dull and may be considerably shortened, perhaps by a half.
Schuster suggests the following three points:
Whenever declination, horizontal force and vertical force is treated, it seems unnecessary to refer also to dip[?] and total force.
It does not seem necessary to give all the results for each month of the year. Such long tabular comparisons of calculated and observed values, such as in table IV, seem unnecessary.
Tables VIII, XV, XXIII, and XXVII may be entirely omitted.
[Published in the Philosophical Transactions A, 1904].
Endorsed on verso as received 22 March 1904.
