Referee's report by William Napier Shaw, on a paper 'On the influence of the time factor on the correlation between Barometric heights at two stations 1000 miles apart' by Frances Evelyn Cave-Browne-Cave
Reference number: RR/16/153
Date: 9 July 1904

Description
Sectional Committee: not stated [Meteorology]
Not recommended for publication in the Philosophical Transactions. There are signs of hurry in the writing out, which are trifling perhaps in themselves but very inconsiderate for the reader. He is not prepared to accept part of the conclusion of the paper without further investigation which the author might be expected to complete. The mathematical method itself is not new but the representation of the time correlation by a curve is, so far as he knows. Unnecessary detail is given, for instance, in setting out the results of each of 20 random predictions. The results obtained represent a large amount of work and are a necessary part of the examination of the method as applied to meteorological data. The part of the paper considering whether the correlation can be accounted for by available meteorological data is quite inadequate. Ample data is available for the region in question. There can be no doubt that in some cases there are correlations between pressure variations at the stations arising from conditions recognised in conventional meteorology. Whether this is true of Wilmington and Halifax requires examination. If it be so the examination of such recognized correlation by Professor K Pearson's method would be very valuable as an illustration of the power of the method to deal with the facts. Recommends they postpone consideration of the paper until the author has had an opportunity of dealing with the latter portion of the work.
