Referee's report by John Joly, on a paper 'The origin and growth of ripple-mark' by Phoebe Sarah Hertha Ayrton
Reference number: RR/16/143
Date: 08 June 1904
Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommended for publication in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Figures three, four, six, eight, nine, eleven, fourteen and sixteen should be reproduced, the last one reduced considerably, and all the figures will bear reduction. In general he thinks the author's proof that ripples are not formed in uniformly running water is crude and inadequate.
In appended manuscript notes, Joly records having some difficulty in forming an opinion on Ayrton's paper. Her experiments are often crude and she forms wide[?] conclusions on apparently slender evidence, thus the view that ripple-marks can be neither formed nor maintained by uniformly running water is, he thinks, not sufficiently established by the experiment cited. Ayrton states she has other experiments suggesting her statement, but Joly does not think the paper should appear without the additional experiments.
Recorded in register of papers as 'withdrawn 20 May, returned in amended form 26 May 1904, manuscript returned to author again 17 June 1906 (see letter book 29, p.16) but not received back'.
