Referee's report by Horace Tabberer Brown, on a paper 'The fossil flora of the Culm-Measures of North West Devon, and the palaeobotanical evidence with regard to the age of the beds' by E A Newell Arber
Reference number: RR/16/140
Date: 17 June 1904
Description
Sectional Committee: Geology and Botany
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, and the geological portion should be published in full. A few suggestions are appended [not attached]. The dates of publication of papers printed in the 'Proceedings of the Geological Society' require attention. Illustrations are not discussed. Regarding the palaeobotanical subdivision '(3) Upper Transition Series' it is desirable to bear in mind how much disturbed the coal measures are at Vobster. Kidston's paper in the 'Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh', XXXVIII, 577, should be referenced by Arber. Whether the Lower Culm Measures were formed in deep water may be regarded as open to question, see 'Nature', 3 January 1901, page 233. There is more in common between the Lower Culm Measures of Devonshire, and the upper part of the Lower Carboniferous of South Wates, than Arber is perhaps aware and Brown provides references for comparisons. The evidence generally supports the view that the Lower Culm Measures represent the Yorkdale (Pendleside) Series; and that the author is correct in including in the Upper Culm Measures the palaeobotanical divisions of Lower as well as Middle coal measures.
