Description

Sectional Committee: Mathematics

Not recommended for publication. Under the heading 'general remarks' he would like the author to be allowed a limited space in Proceedings in which to set forth his views as to the relative importance of the various corrections in practice, and that he be allowed the use of his manuscript in preparing this 'experimental abstract'. In his appended report Love explains that if this paper had appeared ten or eleven years ago he would have recommended its publication, with some modification, in Transactions, but in view of recently published work on the same subject, he cannot. Taylor does not refer to modern text-books such as those of Heath, Herman or Gleichen, and appears unacquainted with [Ernst] Abbe's work as set forth by [Siegfried] Czapski. Discusses three points of difference between the results in Taylor's paper and those given by Czapski, related to the curvature of the image due to a thin lens and a stop, the comatic circle and coma in the secondary plane, and Petzval's expression for the curvature of the image.
