Referee's report by Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer, on a paper 'Cerebral anaemia and the effects which follow ligation of the cerebral arteries' by Leonard Erskine Hill

The first part should not be published in Philosophical Transactions but the second part dealing with experimental anaemia may be published. The author draws far reaching conclusions regarding the functions of the cortex which in no way follow from his experiments. The experiments have no direct bearing upon the question of the autonomy of the motor cortex, yet this question if given a prominent place in the paper. All this ought to be omitted. The facts are chiefly interesting as showing the great variability of the effects of cerebral anaemia, a subject hardly sufficiently dwelt upon. The illustrations are rough tracings and not only not absolutely necessary to understand the text but are themselves difficult to follow, they may be published if adequately described.
