Referee's report by Dukinfield Henry Scott, on a paper 'The histology of the cell wall with special reference to the mode of connection of cells' by Arthur William Hill and Walter Gardiner
Reference number: RR/15/53
Date: 06 August 1900
Description
Sectional committee: Botany
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. It is one of the most important contributions to vegetable histology which has yet been made. All the illustrations are needed and some slight reduction in scale may be necessary to bring them within the dimensions of the plates.
Kienitz-Gertoff's paper in 'Botanische Zeitung', 1891, should be mentioned as the chief previous attempt at work in this direction; though inaccurate in many of its statements Gertoff's discovery of the want of connection between the guard cells of the stomata and the adjacent tissues anticipates the conclusions of the present author. Suggests Charles Darwin be mentioned as discoverer of the sensitivity of the root-tip. The theory that the root-cap is an organ of absorption seems to require more evidence as this appears to have been refuted for example by Pfeffer 'Pflangen Physiologie', 1897, page 134. Suggests the removal of the term 'vessels' sometimes used for the xylem elements in Pinus.
[Published in Philosophical Transactions B, 1901].
